Harmony Central Chorus Leadership

Harmony Central Chorus thrives because of the energy and style of the people who have stepped up to lead. Here are a few of the people that make our ensemble tick:

Management Team

Nate Green

Nathan Green - Director

Harmony Central has had many fine directors over the years and is pleased to welcome Nathan Green as our Director. He has been barbershopping since he was 8 years old and has extensive experience singing in barbershop quartets and choruses, including the Pride of Iowa men's barbershop chorus in Des Moines and his current quartet, Vintage Sound. He is the Music Specialist at West Des Moines Christian Church, and he lives in Ankeny with his wife Sarah and their two sons, where he loves playing guitar, piano, and writing music. Welcome, Nate!

Sharon Gillund, Team Coordinator

Sharon Gillund_2016

Sharon joined Harmony Central Chorus, for the first time, in 1995.  Answering an ad for free singing lessons, she was hooked by the enthusiasm and performance aspect of the chorus - from the first chord!  Over the next seven years she participated on several committees and served as chapter President. Her favorite committee was the annual Show Committee and the opportunity to learn about writing scripts, and presenting a show in the Civic Center was exciting and challenging.  Sharon sang with an active and fun quartet for most of her first seven years. She left the chorus in 2002 when her career got in the way of her hobby. In 2015, the door finally opened to return to chorus life. Though she promised herself that she would return slowly and not volunteer for everything, she is currently the show script committee chairperson for 2016 and the Vice-Team Coordinator.  Sharon's personal philosophy involves getting more members involved on all levels so that the chorus has a steady stream of new ideas and energy to provide an even greater opportunity for area women, of all ages, to have an amazing outlet for their singing and the many skills they possess.

Pam Redford, Vice-Team Coordinator

Pam Redford_2017

Pam joined Sweet Adelines in 2012, first as a member at-large to be a part of a quartet. After attending her first regional contest in 2013 and seeing Harmony Central on stage, she knew she had to be a part of the chorus. She's never once regretted that decision! Pam sings tenor, and has enjoyed many aspects of the chorus; serving on the costume and make-up committees, is co-leader of the visual team, and also is a member of the music team. HCC is a family affair, with both her mom and aunt also part of the chorus! (And her daughters waiting to be old enough to join...) In her non-sequined life, she is a wife to one, mom to five, and has two dogs (but only likes one of them.) Pam is the music director at West Des Moines Christian Church, and is so fortunate to have many HCC members involved in the music programming there. She is looking forward to serving on the Management Team-- working alongside and for so many awesomely talented women.

   Christine Marchand, Communications Coordinator

Christine Marchand_2017After a 20 year hiatus from singing anywhere but her car, Christine stumbled onto Harmony Central through a friend who knew someone who sang in the chorus.  While this happened only three years ago, she quickly found true Sisters in Harmony.  Crunch (as she's known) dove right in her first year and chaired the annual nut sale.  On the risers, she's made her home in the lead section.  One of the biggest lessons she's learned from joining the chorus is that you need to make time for what you love and you should NEVER wait 20 years to participate in something you love.

Patti Albert, Special Events Coordinator

Patti Albert

Patti moved to Iowa from Oklahoma in January of 2015 and visited Harmony Central Chorus her first week here!  She felt lucky that her sister and niece, HCC members, told her that she just had to come.  She was totally hooked from the beginning with the people and their incredible singing, obvious passion and dedication to this amazing craft. She has worked on fundraising projects, particularly the plant sale and has served on the annual show committee (2 years). She has also headed up the Afterglow party for the annual show. She loves the focus on education and has made many friends in this organization. She is looking forward to future performances, music schools, retreats and of course, annual competition weekend! She hopes to encourage others and recruit other members to this wonderful group!

 Judy Engeltjes, Finance Coordinator

Judy joined Harmony Central Chorus in 1992 and sings Lead.  She quickly found herself addicted to the music and immediately felt she had found many new friends.   Judy has previously served on the Management Team as the Facilities Coordinator.   She currently wears a number of hats in the chorus including Music Chairman, Dues Chairman and Show Tickets Chairman and is willing to lend a hand wherever needed.  Judy retired after working for the State of Iowa, Department of Human Services as Administrative Assistant to a Division Administrator.   She has been married to Garry for over 50 years.  They have two adult daughters and two grandchildren.  Besides spending time with family, her other interests include sewing, baking, gardening, reading and a number of volunteer activities.

Deb Lindgren, Education Coordinator

Deb Lindgren_2016

Deb is a 5th and 6th grade teacher at United Community Schools of Boone. She is married and has 2 sons. Her passion for music has been evident since she was young. Her first musical memories were sitting on her mom’s lap, singing, while she played the piano! She has played the piano since age 6 and played trumpet starting at age 10. Her high school education focused around sports and instrumental/vocal music. She was a member of the All State Choir in 1984. She has been singing lead with Harmony Central Chorus since February, 2006.  She has grown as a musician because of her experiences from singing with Sweet Adelines. The friendships and connections a person makes, while singing with a talented group, are precious. She has found that her “singing sisters” are her extended family. Deb’s favorite part of being a member of Harmony Central Chorus is the fun memories the group creates. The yearly competitions, annual shows, church performances, and weekend retreats are a blast, and she thinks everyone should come and sing with us!

Erin Makundi, Membership Coordinator

Erin Makundi_2016

Erin originally joined the Sweet Adelines when she was 16 and sang for three years. She then decided to take time off, go to nursing school and start a family. Erin has been a member of Harmony Central since 2014 and sings lead. When she isn't singing, Erin lives in Ankeny with her husband and 3 kids and works full time as a nurse.

Mary Hall, Marketing Coordinator

Mary Hall_chorus_pic

Mary first learned about Sweet Adelines in 1972, but college, work and life got in the way, so it was another 20 years before she fulfilled her dream of singing a cappella harmony, barbershop style. Mary celebrates her 25th year of Sweet Adeline membership this year. She first joined the Ankeny Northwinds Chorus in 1992. The chorus later merged with the Des Moines Chorus, now known as Harmony Central. She held the position of president of Northwinds when it chartered as a new chorus and has served in a variety of positions in both choruses: president, treasurer, board member, finance coordinator, grant writer and all-round flyer designer/printer. Mary sings bass, travels to as many chorus as many regional events as her schedule will allow and loves the fun, camaraderie and love that the chorus provides. Mary has spent a lifetime singing, but that’s not what pays the bills! The work that inspires her enough to keep her employed for over 17 years and interrupts her obsessive hobbies of singing and reading is at HCI-VNS Care Services. Mary provides resources and educational support for clinical staff who provide care for at-risk families, end-of- life care for those with critical and life-challenging illness and bereavement services.

Jolene Kubli, Physical Assets Coordinator

Jolene Kubli_2017

Jolene joined the Heart of Iowa Chorus in Marshalltown in 1980 and has been a dual member with Harmony Central since 2013.  She has served as Section Specialist, Assistant Director, Music Team Member, Show Chair, frontline director for Heart of Iowa for about 16 years and served on the Region 5 Management Team as the Chapter Coordinator.  She has sung with three different quartets over the years as well, The Acappellas winning Region 20 competition in 1981 and 1982.  The Acappellas placed 9th at the Detroit International Competition. She and husband Gene (of 40 years) live in Conrad, have 2 sons and 4 grandchildren.  Jolene has been singing all her life and is currently an elementary music teacher, K-4 at Marshalltown Community Schools.  She's finishing her 39th year of teaching music. She also directed a children's choir for 3 years after school in State Center, and was music director at HOPE UMC in Marshalltown for 17 years.  Her hobbies include enjoying grandchildren, camping, researching genealogy, knitting and making small quilt type projects.  She has met many amazing women during her years of making music around the region and is anticipating the next year with the chorus.
